CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – As Canton City Council considers a 75% tax abatement along with direct payment plans for three data center developers planning to move here, residents have been concerned about water usage by the centers.

Mayor Bill Sherer says “not a problem”.

He claims the three city data centers as well as the one on Faircrest Street SW in Perry Township will use less than 2% of the water that the shuttered Republic Steel plant used in its heyday, 20,000,000 gallons per year.

At Republic, it was more like $1.1-billion at times.

The mayor also proposes getting rid of the Canton Water Department’s “use more, pay less” philosophy that’s been in place for decades.

A presentation on the data center tax abatement takes place at just after 6 p.m. Monday in council chambers.

The vote follows during the 7 p.m. meeting.
