A generation ago, many breast cancer patients received similar treatments, but now experts say advances in treatment have led to specialized treatment options.
Dr. Nadeem Ikhlaque, a medical oncologist from Columbus Regional Health, joined WISH-TV’s Health Spotlight segment Thursday night.
He said advances in testing and treatment allow physicians to better understand each patient’s cancer and create personalized treatment plans.
He said treatment plans can differ based on the type of breast cancer, whether it has spread, a patient’s overall health, and a patient’s needs and preferences.
Ikhlaque said patients should always ask their doctors about their personal treatment plan before starting it.
He said to ask questions such as “Why is this treatment right for me?” and “What side effects might I have?”
