Barnes & Noble coming back to tech-driven East Bay hub

(KRON) -- A Barnes & Noble is coming back to an East Bay city after initially closing down more than 10 years ago. The bookstore giant is opening in Fremont's Pacific Commons Shopping Center in December, according to a Barnes & Noble spokesperson.

The bookstore is scheduled to open on Dec. 9, the spokesperson added. It is located next to the Sephora and Old Navy of the shopping center.

Barnes & Noble's return to Fremont comes after it reportedly closed on Mowry Avenue in 2010.

"It’s great to see another major retailer choosing to invest in Fremont, creating more shopping options and making Pacific Commons an even stronger destination for our community," Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan wrote in an Instagram post where residents expressed their excitement about the news.

Fremont is known as a tech-driven East Bay hub as it is home to major technology and manufacturing companies, including one of Tesla's facilities. The city, though technically not in Silicon Valley, is close enough to the global tech hub and often draws from the same pool of talent.

Last year, Barnes & Noble acquired Bay Area chain Books Inc. in a multi-million-dollar deal.

Since September 2025, there have been a mix of both openings and closures in the Bay Area, including in San Bruno, Cupertino and Redwood City. Barnes & Noble, however, did not cite the acquisition as a reason for any recent openings and closures.
