Tuesday evening, Yann Sommer again celebrated a great 4-3 victory with Bruges against his former club, Inter Milan. A few hours later, he announced on Instagram that he and his wife Alina had decided to separate at the beginning of the year.
This decision would have been taken by mutual agreement after careful consideration. “We keep a memory full of respect and gratitude of our life together,” writes the former Nati goalkeeper. “Our two daughters will bond us forever,” adds Yann Sommer. “Their happiness and well-being remain our top priority.”
They had been together since 2016 and got married in 2019. Alina is from Cologne and met and fell in love with the Zurich native when he was playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
A lawyer by training, she has not often been exposed to the limelight. However, she has often been seen in stadiums, notably during the 2018 World Cup in Russia or Euro 2024 in Germany.
A touching moment also occurred two years later. Sommer was voted MVP at the 2021 Sports Awards. “As you may know, my wife gave us an adorable little girl during the Euro,” said the former national team goalkeeper. He missed the birth despite leaving the national team training camp at the last minute.
“We are very grateful to you for everything you do and everything you accomplish for us every day. That makes you my great hero,” Sommer said, his throat tight. “What you accomplish behind the scenes is incredible.” In 2022, SRF broadcast a documentary on the goalkeeper. He also mentioned his wife at the time. “When I leave the world of football and become a simple citizen again, of course I have uncertainties and worries. This is where she is my great support!”
